• Animal Magic!

  The whole school enjoyed a very special visit this week.  Thank you to Laura, from The Animal Man company how came into school on Wednesday and was a particular highlight of the year! It was wonderful to hear the children link the experience to their learning – comments ranged from the needs of animals, to how we can protect our environment and live sustainably to prevent animals from becoming endangered or extinct.  

  

• Rodin Inspires Class 4

  Class 4 's work during the last half term about Rodin has inspired them with their first attempt at making our own sculptures, we can't to see how they refine their skills during the rest of this term!

  

• Support for Local Charities

  School Council pupils made contact with House of Bread in Stafford and the Food Bank in Rugeley to find out how best we could support our local community. Instead of the traditional Harvest offerings, pupils and families have donated toiletry items - thank you for your support!

  

• Scarecrow Fest

  The children in Class 1 have shared their scarecrow creations with the whole school this week. Thank you to the parents and carers who were able to join the children for their Scarecrow Making Workshop. We love them!  Well done.

• Sunflower Masterpieces

  Class 2 children are focusing on Vincent Van Gogh in their Art lessons during this term. They have spent the last few weeks looking at images of his 'Sunflowers' painting and this week began to produce their own pieces.  Fantastic work!

  

• Bedtime Story Snuggles

  Each week a pupil from Class 1 takes home the 'Snuggle Up with a Bedtime Story Suitcase'. Inside the suitcase we include a high quality story book, a reading buddy, some key questions and finally some hot chocolate to share - what a treat!  The children (and parents) love this.

  

• Olympic Dreams For St John's

  Olympic Dreams for St John’s 

  Our children have enjoyed their PE sessions this year with a special teacher who has also given them a real enthusiasm for this summer’s Olympics.   Keri Lees, a former Olympian herself, has taught at the school for the past six years, delivering twice-weekly sessions for children from Reception age to Year 6 who are about to start high school. 

  Keri started her sports career at just nine years of age, training and competing in sprint events for Stafford Athletics Club. She enjoyed some local successes and then from the age of about 12 years she was successful at a national level in the 200m, coming 2nd at the English Schools Championships. She soon changed to the sprint hurdles after “falling in love with the event” after filling in for a fellow club member who dropped out. She then started competing for Great Britain at the age of 15 and won Silver and Gold medals in the World and European Junior Championships respectively.  

  As a senior athlete Keri specialised in both the 100m and 400m hurdles and took part in European and World Championships, World Student Games and the Commonwealth Games. In 2000 she was selected for the Olympic Games (a childhood dream) and competed in the 400 hurdles in Sydney.  

  Since retiring from Athletics in 2001, Keri has taught in schools and now works for Stafford Sports and Performance Academy, teaching PE and delivering after school clubs in primary schools in the Stafford area.  

  “The children really love their sessions with Keri, she has a real bond with many of them, especially our Year 6 leavers who have known Keri since they started school in Reception.  When she brings her medals in they feel like she is a real celebrity.  Their enthusiasm for sport and athletics events is so great, we are sure we are watching some of our future Olympians!” commented Mrs Lucy Barber, Head of School at St John’s.

• Welcome to Mrs Lomas and Miss Barber!

  New Leadership Role for St John's Catholic Primary School

   

  We are delighted to announce the appointment of Mrs Justine Lomas as our new Executive Leader.  Justine has recently been appointed to the role of Headteacher and Executive Leader at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Brewood and her role has now been expanded to also include St John’s.  Both schools are part of The Painsley Catholic Academy.  

  Justine brings with her over 27 years of experience in Catholic education. She began her career as a newly qualified teacher in an inner-city school in Birmingham before joining St. Mary’s in Cannock as the Deputy Head and then went onto her first headship role at St. Anne’s Catholic Primary School in Stafford, another school within The Painsley Catholic Academy. Mrs Lomas worked more recently for the Archdiocese of Birmingham in a school improvement role.  In this position, she was able to work very closely with the leaders of a wide range of Catholic schools with differing needs.   

   

  Justine will be working closely with the Acting Head of School, Lucy Barber. Lucy has 11 years of experience in primary education, with an outstanding track record as a class teacher and fully qualified SENCO. Lucy was most recently the Assistant Head at St. Patrick's Catholic Primary School in Stafford. 

   

  Justine and Lucy will work in partnership with pupils, parents, Governors and Parish to ensure that St John’s continues to provide a top-class education and provides wider personal development opportunities for all children. 

   

  “St John’s is such a lovely school community; I’ve already been made to feel very welcome and am looking forward to getting know all of our children and families and welcoming our new starters in September.” commented Mrs Lomas. 

  

• Milking time!

  As part of our curriculum vehicle ‘In the field,’ Class One have been learning about cows and the products that come from cows. The children have learned how cows are milked on a dairy farm with machinery and how cows are milked by hand. Class One were lucky enough to enjoy the hands-on experience of milking Mary, the dairy cow. They very carefully squeezed Mary’s udders to extract the milk. Well done, Class One! (and well done, Mary!)
